Not Just Another Line Dance Choreographer!

 instructor who is based in England. Born in a small mining village, Coalburn in Lanarkshire, 

Scotland, Robbie McGowan Hitchie, born in a family with 9 children, now lives in England. 

Proud of his origin, Robbie is a Scottish and wouldn’t want to be anything else. 

Robbie moved to England together with his family when he left school at 16, after the coal 

mine where his dad worked closed and there was little job prospect in the village. However, 

he’s very proud of his humble background. Robbie has been line-dancing since 1996 and he 

first discovered the joys of line-dancing when he joined ‘Nottingham Outlaws’ in Eastlands. 

During the early happy days, he would be the first on the dance floor whenever ‘One Step 

Forward’ was played. He loved ‘Good ‘Ol Boys’ too.

He enrolled for a Teacher Training course with BWDA in Spring 1997 and by Summer 1998, 

he was a qualified Level 4 instructor. In January 2004, he received his teaching certificate as 

an advanced teacher and choreographer, & became an honorary member of WOWDA (World 

of Western Dance Association)

Robbie started his own class known as Nottingham Knights in 1998, and as the class grew, he 

moved to another venue, where he still teaches today. He also conducted workshops in many 

other parts of the line-dancing world outside England.

How did Robbie get involved in choreography? Well, In June 1997, Robbie wrote his first 

choreography, “Dance My Lindy Lou’ and the dance was popular in the Nottingham areas, He must 

thanked Pete Stephenson for encouraging and asking him to write ‘Dance My Linda Lou’ specially 

for his (Pete) wife’s birthday, and that turned out to be the start of something that is a major part of 

his life. He attributes his success to many people and his best friend, Kate Sala. 

Among many of his famous and popular choreography, he wrote and contributed chart topping hits 

such as Alcazar, My Reason, Painkiller, Crazy For You, Jump The Gun, etc.
