Irene Tang, Line Dance Instructor and choreographer in Hong Kong, has contributed very much to linedancing in Hng Kong  and she is instrumental in promoting linedancing in her place of residence and other part of the world. Irene started dancing back in 1999, and in those early days she learnt dance styles like Latin and Jazz. She was first attracted to line dance in 2001, primarily because it was a style not requiring a partner, relatively simple to learn and easy to master; and more importantly for its wide spectrum, incorporating various dance forms and dance cultures.

Irene is particularly fascinated by the tremendous growth in line dancing during all these years. She remarked that she was truly amazed by the treasure trove that the rapid developing line dancing communities have been offering ever since. Not only was there an increase in the number of dance styles being absorbed in line dancing, the speed with which choreographers tried to keep in pace with new songs coupled with the free and wide dissemination through the web all added to the favorable reception of line dancing. Irene noted that she had learnt over a thousand dances before she became a dance instructor.

Nobody would ever doubt Irene’s earnest pursuit of line dancing excellence. Apart from practicing with local dancers, Irene also attended major international line dancing workshops in places including the US, Canada, Japan, Taiwan and Malaysia where she shared dancing knowledge and experiences with renowned dancers and dance practitioners, and her contributions in these workshops were well recognized.

Irene has earned her name as “crazy dancer” by friends deeply touched by her dedication and passion in line dance. In 2006, with great determination Irene gave up a stable and high paying job to make dancing her career. She began teaching at the Hong Kong Line Dancing Club in 2008. In June 2010, Irene set up Line Dance Studio in Hong Kong and has been teaching full time since.

Currently, her daily routine is to go through the treasure trove in the line dancing communities worldwide diligently, to search for and to identify great dances for self advancement as well as for teaching purposes. Dances will in turn be incorporated into her teaching schedule and be shared with her students of various levels. As a dancing instructor, Irene’s quest is to spread and nourish the seeds of passion for western line dancing amongst her students. She has defined teaching excellence in the following terms: first and foremost, that her students enjoy serious but happy dancing in her studio; secondly, that they appreciate the unique characteristics, tempo and movements of different dance styles, and while at the same time enjoying good music, students should be able to recognize the diverse beats, rhythms and music associated with different dance styles; last but not least, that they engage the most appropriate dance techniques, expressions and fluidity of body movements to interpret each and every dance. All in all, she wants to establish positive learning attitudes and a high standard and criteria for line dancing in Hong Kong.

Apart from teaching, Irene also enjoys choreographing. She has so far choreographed 24 dances as a way of sharing her interpretation of styles and ideas. She makes it a routine also to videotape dances taught every week as another means to facilitate learning and sharing. Further, Irene has been involved in promoting line dancing as a worthwhile sport for all in Hong Kong. In these endeavors to promote the sport, she managed to put together various dance styles in the shows and her performances were always well received.

Thank you, Irene, for contributing to linedancing - we know you will continue in your pursuit of linedancing excellence, Cheers!
